The practice of restricting flight deck activity to duties essential to safe operation during critical phases of flight — taxi, takeoff, landing and all operations below 10,000 feet other than cruise. Originating in 14 CFR § 121.542 for air carriers, it is widely adopted as a general aviation best practice.
