The time between the end of evening civil twilight and the beginning of morning civil twilight, as published in the Air Almanac, converted to local time.
Three different rules use “night”, and they do not all mean the same clock:
- Logging night flight — 14 CFR § 1.1: end of evening civil twilight to the beginning of morning civil twilight (roughly, when artificial illumination is needed to read outside on the ground).
- Night recency to carry passengers — 14 CFR § 61.57(b): from 1 hour after sunset to 1 hour before sunrise, both for carrying passengers at night and for logging the takeoffs and landings that satisfy the requirement.
- Position lights required — 14 CFR § 91.209: sunset to sunrise.
